I am writing this reference on behalf of Colin Gregg and his company Gregg Builders Ltd. Colin has built two homes for me and my family over the last 5 years, and although neither house was particularly easy to build, both were finished on time, and budget and to the highest standard of workmanship. Colin took the time before building to sit down and sort out any potential pitfalls, and any problems that arose during or after construction were quickly dealt with.
I found Colin and all his staff to be hard working, friendly and courteous, and only happy to explain things to me as they went along. The end result is a house that is well built, comfortable to live in and is constantly admired by friends and strangers alike.

Four years ago we started to think about building a house. We are now sitting in that house which would not have become a reality without the wonderful talents of Gregg Builders. We approached Colin on the basis of a recommendation from one of his previous clients and he and all his team have been outstanding in every way.
The house was challenging to build. It has a lower storey of concrete block with a concrete intermediate floor. It is of a thermal mass design with insulation over the main bearing walls and hard plastered block veneer outside. The top story is timber with recycled rimu weatherboard cladding. A number of the walls are curved. All these create challenges for a builder.
The result is a unique house with many attractive features. We used unpainted STO hard plaster over block inside, the first time this European finish had been applied in the South Island. We used a great deal of recycled timber. All the interior doors were constructed of laminated framing rimu from the house which we demolished on the property. Interior joinery was also made of 150year old recycled Jarrah. These materials are a good deal more demanding than MDF. The stairways have stainless steel and glass balustrades which again demand a high standard of finish.
If anything needed changing, it was altered directly. At each step we were kept fully informed and many decisions were mulled over until the best outcomes were achieved. In the months that the job proceeded we developed a great rapport with all of the staff and many of the subcontractors. So many small and large problems were nutted out on the job in the early mornings, to our very considerable satisfaction. Over and above all that, Gregg Builders kept to budget and had it not been for some atrocious weather, would have kept to time. This was, and is, a great achievement given how much of the design was decided as the construction proceeded.
We are hugely grateful to Colin and his team for doing such a great job. We have developed a tremendous respect for the many skills that it takes to build a house like ours to a high standard. We cannot imagine how the experience could have been better. Gregg Builders built our house but we were able to travel along with that process in a way that suited us. That is also a great talent. No two clients are the same and no two houses are the same. It takes great skill to build a house for a client in a way that ends up with the house the client wants, built in a way that the client finds satisfying. On the basis of our experience we would recommend Gregg Builders to anyone who wants to feel the excitement of the project, who wants a quality house, and who wants that done skillfully and well.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Bruce and Colin Gregg for some 10 years now. During this time they have undertaken a variety of jobs for our own business enterprises, from large woolsheds to small renovations. At the wetting of our new woolshed, for example, I described them as amoung the few remaining craftsman left, who were capable of not only erecting buildings but also finishing them to a standard that is all too rare.
Colin Gregg, whose father, Bruce has retired and who now runs the business and its competent team of builders, is well able to continue this fine tradition. Careful planning, detailed onsite control and prompt completion typify the way Gregg Builders operate, for whom nothing ever appears too much trouble. And so, whether ones requirements are house & home or larger projects (like farm buildings), I do not think any client will be dissatisfied indeed, quite the opposite! I commend them to you.

Colin Gregg employs a staff, consisting of young energetic dedicated builders. They worked late into the night and early mornings. They lived on site and completed our homestead of 550 sqm in five months, from June until October. (Conditions including ice, snow and howling winds!) Kate, Colin’s wife was also very much part of the team.
There was never a delay for the subcontractors? Colin had them well organized in advance. There was no job too big or too small for Colin and his men. He is a superb organizer and helped us through issues with great tact and diplomacy! Always keeping his sense of humour and would go out of his way to show us examples and ideas.

We acted as Project Manager for a large and complicated residential refurbishment with Colin Gregg Builders during 2008. The contract was approximately 5 months in duration with limited architectural documentation and a client that demanded an exceptionally high level of detail and finish. This required extensive coordination by the Main Contractor with over 15 specialist subtrades and several consultants.
Colin Gregg and his team delivered the project within the project’s deadlines and met the quality level in all areas. However, over and above the outcome, we believe that the dedication, organisation and communication by his company during the contract period ensured a hassle free delivery.

Around 5 years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Colin after basically banging on his door to see if he would consider the services of my company in respect to the installation of security systems in the homes that he built. (I was the new boy on the block at the time) A great deal of time has since passed and I am pleased to say that I have since installed many security systems for Colins clients ... and in saying that for many other home building companies with whom we now work with.
Having however experienced the satisfaction of Colins clients first hand and further having seen the finished product on a number of occasions it was Colin and his team that my wife and I chose to build our first new home at 3 Smacks Close, Harewood, Christchurch.
I am pleased to say that we were thrilled with the end product as were so many others who visited our home... so many in fact it has since sold and Colin has recently completed the construction of our second home... according to my wife, our last!
I found the experience of building with Colin easy, albeit that I would have to admit to having learned one valuable lesson, that being just to leave everything to him!
We love our new home and will be ever grateful for the service we have and continue to receive and would not hesitate to build with Colin again in the future.
If you have a piece of dirt my suggestion would be, let Colin turn it into a home for you. Suggestion 2... go on holiday while he does it!
